Business Leaders to Participate in
Community Reading
Day
Reading & Presenting Books to Bedford County 2nd Grade Classes
The Bedford County Chamber Foundation is pleased to present Community Reading Day at
elementary schools throughout the county on April 16th, 2014.
Community leaders, representing Bedford County Chamber of Commerce member businesses,
volunteer each year to read and present books to more than 500 students in
nearly 30 second grade classes.
The literacy program, which has been
offered by the Chamber for more than a decade, is designed to help students
appreciate the value of reading as well as gain exposure to various businesses
as the volunteers visit their classrooms.
This year’s selected book is The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate The Wash, written by Trinka Hakes Noble. The books are provided through a partnership with the Bedford Elks Country
Club & Lodge and will be presented to each 2nd grade class in
the Bedford County public school system. Bookmarks will also be given to each 2nd grade student
as well.
“We are very thankful to the Bedford Elks
Lodge, our bookmark sponsors, and our volunteers for their generous support of
Community Reading Day,” said Chamber Foundation Executive Director, Kellie
Goodman Shaffer. “We are pleased to be
able to offer this valuable program to Bedford County schools and look forward
to continuing it in future years.”
